Overview
Description: In 2013 APS were commissioned to design a new lodge and associated facilities, to replace an old and deteriorated beach camp, for private use on the coast line of Inhassoro, Mozambique.
Challenge: In consultation with the client and the local contractor we immediately researched local building types and techniques, and familiarized ourselves with the local weather conditions, as well as other contextual challenges and opportunities (prevailing wind, rain, high tide, locally available building materials and construction skills).
Solution: We realised that the on-shore winds in this area could get quite strong as it whipped along the coast, so we set the individual dwelling units as far back from the coast line as possible, within the indigenous tree line, whilst still trying to provide a sea side view to each unit. The communal dining, lounge and kitchen facilities were located centrally within the site and the swimming pool brought forward for optimal views and proximity to the Indian Ocean. As is tradition in the area, the buildings were all made with light weight timber frame / clad walls and floors with wide overhanging roofs made with local palm thatch, allowing for cheap and easy construction, which is resistant to coastal rusting, and can be practically maintained throughout the year. The site was planned so that back of house, utility facilities (laundry, kitchen, workshop and stores) are sensibly out of site and out of the way.
